The list of items to prove status are really biased toward retirees and current military:
Valid Veteran and Active Duty Identification to Obtain Free Entree:
U.S. Uniform Services Identification Card
U.S. Uniform Services Retired Identification Card
Current Leave and Earnings Statement (LES)
Veterans Organization Card (i.e., American Legion and VFW)
Photograph in uniform
Wearing uniform
You would only have the first 3 or #6 if you are current active duty or retired. Not everyone joins the VA or Legion. Photo in uniform is easier, but not everyone would have one.
My guess is that someone didn’t really understand what a veteran would have (versus current active duty). I spent 10 years active and reserve and only have the photo (and a very old ID card).
I have to assume there are other items they will accept as well.
