Don’t you just love it when you find money? A penny on the sidewalk, quarter underneath a couch cushion, or a few bucks in the pocket of an old jacket can really make your day. What made my day recently was finding out that we had $70 in unclaimed funds. I just visited MissingMoney.com, picked my state, filled in my name, and there it was in all its glory.
MissingMoney.com is a database of state unclaimed property records. Common types of unclaimed property include bank accounts, safe deposit box contents, stocks, mutual funds, bonds, dividends, un-cashed checks, wages, insurance policies, CD’s, trust funds, utility deposits, escrow accounts, and more. Ours was from the healthcare provider my husband had at his last job.
To get receive your unclaimed funds you need to print and fill out a form, be able to prove that you are you (and the SSN is optional), prove that you once had a relationship with that company, and prove that you lived at the address that company has on file for you. If you are good at keeping records this shouldn’t be hard. If your unclaimed money is over $100 the form must be notarized.
The site currently has 37 participating states (3 more soon to join), along with The District of Columbia, Puerto Rico, and parts of Canada.
MissingMoney.com is absolutely free and has been mentioned on the Today Show and CNN.com.
